These players will have a distinct advantage going into the tryouts. I expect they will all show very well.”

Rams Midgets Announce 2008 Coaching Staff

Head Coach Greg Johnson today announced the new coaching staff.

“I am again very excited about the quality of this years coaching staff. Alberta U-17 Team North is again entering a team in this summers Canada Cup and the Bantams will have summer games teams to try out for. Both tryouts will fall in the Midget season. Players participating in the Rams Midget program will have a distinct advantage in making these teams. They will b e playing at game speed, be in game condition and have had the benefit of exceptional coaching. We have, without a doubt the best coaching staff in Midget football."

Returning on offense are current Rams bantam offensive coordinator Bruce Cunningham , 2nd year Chilliwack (B.C Junior league) lineman Matt White and Eskimo quarterback Jason Maas. New this year are first year U of A receiver Duncan Hankinson, first year Edmonton Huskie quarterback Andrew Sieben, 1st year Edmonton Huskie lineman Shawn Hutton and Bev Facey coach Zack Smith. Long time high school coach, now with the Edmonton Huskies, Pete Smith will b e the offensive coordinator.

Returning on defense are Sal coach Pat Schryver and 4th year Edmonton Huskie lineman Craig Gerbrandt. New this year are ABJ coach Kyle Skitsko , 2nd year Edmonton Huskie linebacker Korey Johnson and 1st year Edmonton Huskie defensive back Kurtis McDonald. Long time high school coach and 2 time Head Coach for Team North in the Senior Bowl Paul Schwartz will b e the defensive coordinator.

Negotiations are still ongoing regarding 2 more coaches.

 Coach Johnson went on to add:

"The Rams Midgets have been in the Championship game in all of the 3 years the league has operated. I would expect another strong team this year. Considering the coaching staff on board we expect to be challenging for the championship again. The goal of our program is to further develop our high school players. The players who have just completed a midget season are light years ahead of players who have not suited up since last fall. Midget players participating at the high school spring camps always stand out.”

Try outs are Friday night March 7th and Saturday afternoon March 8th . the location will be announded shortly.

Head Coach Greg Johnson made the following announcement today:

I am very excited about the quality of this year's coaching staff. With Alberta entering a Under 17 Team North in this summer's Canada Cup (to be held in Quebec in July) I wanted to put together a coaching staff that would give our players the best opportunity to make that team. We have a number of excellent returning coaches as well as some exciting additions. We have without a doubt the best coaching staff in Midget football in the province.

Returning on Offense are Bruce Cunningham and Matt Oberle. New this year are Darrell Souster (coaching experience with Edmonton Wildcats, bantam Rams and Facey Falcons), Jason Meraw (5 years as a player on the Edmonton Huskies), Rod Kay (coaching experience with bantam Rams and Ardrossan Bisons), Matt White (playing experience Chilliwack BCJFL and coaching experience Jordan Scots), Blake Dermott ( coaching experience with bantam Northstars, Sal Sabres and 14 years CFL as a player with the Eskimos) and Jason Maas ( current CFL star quarterback).

Returning on Defense are Pat Schryver (coaching experience with bantam Northstars and Rams, Sal Sabres), Craig Gerbrandt (current 3 year player Edmonton Huskies), Cory Lakusta (5 year player Edmonton Huskies and 1 year U of A Bears), Dan Bass Jr. ( current U of A Bear), and Joel Barry ( current 2 year player Edmonton Huskies). New this year are Kenton Martz ( coaching experience Sal Sabres) and Dan Bass ( former CFL star and Hall of Fame member.) Returning after a 1 year absence is Mark Feledichuk ( coaching experience bantam Rams and Ardrossan Bisons).

That’s what Midget football is all about.

This 2007 spring football league will have approximately 12 teams, split into two tiers

The RAMS Midget Football team has 15 coaching staff that are connected to many high schools in Strathcona County and Fort Saskatchewan as well as the Huskies, Golden Bears and ex Eskimo’s. What a great opportunity to play with fellow rivals from the high school season!

Here is how the registration will work:

  • Registration will take place and must be completed by Feb. 24 at Millennium Place from 3:00 to 5:00 PM
  • From all the applications a maximum 80 players will be invited to the tryout camp. The names of those players invited to camp will be posted on the RAMS website March 15. Only the names posted may show-up.
  • Each player is responsible for obtaining their equipment from their high school. If there are any problems the RAMS will help the player obtain equipment. You must supply your own mouth guard. Equipment must be obtained prior to actual tryout dates.
  • Tryout camp on March 17-18, 2-a-days both days regardless of weather. Location to be determined based on weather conditions
  • Tryout fee $25. This includes insurance and lunches and therefore must be paid before a player goes on the field. Cheque payable to RAMS Midget Football.
  • Maximum 45 players will make the final roster. Ten must be from grade 9, and ten from grade 10; a maximum twenty five from Grade 11.
  • The final team roster will be posted on the RAMS website by 9:00 p.m. on March 18.
  • The player fee is $275.00 to be paid at the first practice less the $25 tryout fee. This fee also includes a skills camp with the Huskies costing $25.
  • Season ends May 12 weekend.

Physical condition will play a major role in selecting players so get in shape!
