Rams celebrate 10 years of bursaries

Bantam football team awards scholarships to 18 more players, upping its overall total to 81 over a decade

It’s now been a decade of endowments.

Ten years of touching the lives of those that used to score their touchdowns.

The Sherwood Park Rams football club recently announced that an impressive 18 former players from their bantam squad will be receiving bursaries in excess of $17,000 this year.

The monies will be presented at their 10th annual golf tournament being held at Legends golf course on June 18.

“This marks the 10th year that the Rams have met their promise to former Rams that the club will help them with the greatest investment they can make in themselves — their education” said head coach Jim Skitsko.

This year’s totals even exceed last year’s record amount when the Rams doled out 16 bursaries to former players, totaling $14,400 in financial assistance to help with the rising cost of obtaining an education.

With the latest 18 awards, the Rams have now given bursaries to 81 players in the 10-year span.

“It’s awesome, it really is. The growth of this program has been nothing less than phenomenal,” said Skitsko, Rams head coach since the inception of the bursary program.

“First there is an idea. Then you plant the seed. And then you hope the tree grows. Our bursary tree is really starting to branch out now and is showing it is successful. Now that it appears to have taken total solid roots, you have all the believers. When you see the ones that we helped when we first started successful in the work force now, that makes you feel really good.”

The recipients this year are:

• Jordan Adamson, Economics, Pacific Lutheran University

• Michael Berg, Instrumentation, N.A.I.T.

• Garrett Elsey, Arts, Carleton University

• Greg Frost, Business, University of Calgary

• Eric Ginda, Agriculture, University of Alberta

• Chad Gordon, Arts, University of Alberta

• Ryan Granberg, Kinesiology, Queen’s University

• Pierce Hnatiuk, Physical Education, University of Alberta

• Shawn Hutton, Electrical Technology, N.A.I.T.

• Brayden Kagel, Education, Grant MacEwan College

• Michael Korte, Engineering, University of Alberta

• Jonathon Leighton, Carpentry, Lakeland College

• Marc Mazurak, Heavy Equipment, N.A.I.T.

• Dustin McDonald, Power Technology, N.A.I.T.

• Chad Nicpon, Engineering, University of Alberta

• Ben Proulx, Journalism, Grant MacEwan College

• Brett Raftis, Civil Engineering Technology, N.A.I.T.

• Matt Speers, Plumbing and Gas Fitting, N.A.I.T.

“Once again this is proof positive that the Rams believe in what the team tells the players: ‘Football is fun — Education is forever’” added golf tournament chairperson Rhonda Newman.

The bantam Rams have won five of the last six Tier I provincial championships.

YOURSELF WHILE REWARDING EXCELLENCE!

You know the importance of post-secondary education. It’s really the key to success today! But did you know this?

Our province desperately needs today’s high school graduates to pursue post-secondary education so we can fill positions in the future when all the baby boomers retire. Their education is just as important to our businesses and economy as it is to them.

Unfortunately, the current economy is making it harder for more and more of our kids to get a post-secondary education. That’s why the 10th Annual Sherwood Park Rams Bursary Golf Tournament is more important than ever. Every penny raised at this tournament goes to Rams alumni, kids who have worked hard on the field and played their hearts out for our team, to help them get the post-secondary educations they need and deserve.

Over the last nine years, we have awarded 62 bursaries totaling $46,400 to alumni attending post secondary education. This year, we have between 15 and 20 students eligible to receive funding and have set a tournament goal to net $25,000.

Please join us on Thursday June 18, 2009 at The Legends Golf and Country Club for an amazing round of golf, a superb steak dinner, prizes galore and a whole lot of fun — and help us send our kids to school.

As you may know, the Legends golf course is one of the finest golf courses in the area and the clubhouse offers an unbeatable view of our North Saskatchewan River. Each golfer will receive a 10th anniversary keepsake gift, as well as the chance to win great prizes.

This is your opportunity to support our young people in making their dreams come true while ensuring a better Alberta for everyone AND take part in an incredible and unique golfing experience. If you’re not a golfer, there are plenty of other ways to help:

  • Call or email friends, relatives, co-workers, suppliers and contacts who love golf
  • Sponsor a hole — it’s a great way to get your name out
  • Donate cash or prizes — again, let everyone know who you are and that you care

Tickets for this event are $175 per golfer or $650 when you submit a foursome.  If that’s not enough to get you to buy your spot today, perhaps the chance to golf with none other than Gizmo Williams or Willy Pless will?!  All golfers paid and registered before April 30th will have their name entered to have Gizmo or Pless as their golf partner.

If you’d like more information or want to buy your tickets today, please visit our website at www.sherwoodparkrams.com.  Sponsorship and golf registration can be all done online.  If you still have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at (780) 464-4132 or newmanconsulting@shaw.ca.

Attached, please find a Sponsorship Sheet detailing the goodies you’ll get when you support us and sponsor a hole, as well as your Registration Form. Remember to get it in early to get Gizmo or Pless on your team!

On behalf of this year’s RAMS alumni, thank you in advance for your support.

What is the Golf Bursary Intended to Accomplish?

As we all know, the cost of an education continues to increase. When our players graduate from high school and wish to pursue a post secondary education, the RAMS are able to assist each player with a one time bursary. The amount of each year's bursary varies based on the funds generated by the previous year's golf tournaments. It is the symbolism of the team's motto and ability to reach out to alumni of the RAMS FAMILY long after they graduate as RAMS that sets our team apart. We believe that by players making commitments to education, the club should in turn assist each player who wishes to pursue an education. Last year (2007) seven players were awarded bursaries of $850 each. Over the past seven years, 51 players have been helped with cheques from this worthy event.

Why is this Important to the RAMS Philosophy?

To say that education is important in our ever competitive society is an understatement. As the coaching staff stresses day in and day out, "You can't play if you can't pass." It is like that in life as well. As practising on the football field makes each player better and in turn helps the team, so do good work habits and studying in the class room make for a better prepared citizen in the game of life. Simply put, education is the key. This is the message that a Ram will hear in the RAMS locker room.

What Can You Do to Help?

There are several ways that you can help us succeed:

  1. Register for the golf tournament as soon as possible.
  2. Make it a social or business gathering and register a foursome.
  3. Donate golf prizes, sponsor holes or sponsor events such as our breakfast or luncheon.
  4. Volunteer your time to help us make this another success this year.
