The streak has been snuffed.
Perhaps the most impressive local sporting streak ever assembled came to an end on Sunday at Strathcona Athletic Park when the Sherwood Park Rams lost out to the rival Sherwood Park Wolverines 36-0.
It was the first loss in almost FIVE YEARS for the four time defending provincial champion Rams, who had gone an incredible 57 games and one tie without a loss.
Nothing really seemed to go right for the Rams starting with a play in the first quarter with the Wolverines up 7-0 when running back Derek Koss scampered 54 yards before getting tangled up with the grass at SAP and falling down at the six. The Rams couldn't punch the ball in from there and turned the ball over on downs.
If they had scored could this have been a different ball game?
"If it wasn't for the turf monster tripping up Derek Koss we could have tied the game up early and it may have been a different story" said Rams offensive coordinator Bruce Cunningham.
Rams head coach JIm Skitsko was just amazed that the streak went on as long as it did.
"We have just approached each game as it came and the next thing you know it's four years and eleven months later before we lose another game" he said."It was an amazing run but life will go on."
But losing by such a margin in front of a massive crowd to boot didn't sit well with the Rams players. "It's not a good feeling" said Bretten Obenauer. 'There were so many of our guys from the team before this who came out to watch the game. YOu almost feel like you le them down a bit. It's not a good feeling for a winning streak to end."
We got outplayed but the loss was a team loss. It wasn't the captains' fault, the veterans' fault or the rookies' fault" said Rams receiver Colton Balicki. "It was all of us."
Rams Defensive coordinator Greg Johnson says the Rams just didn't have it on the day. " I thought for the most part the defense played quite well" he said. "Unfortunately 'for the most part' won't win football games against talented teams. The winning streak has ended as all do such streaks do at some point. It was ended by a determined Wolverine club who were better in all three facets of the game. Kudos to the Wolverines for bringing their 'A' game. This was not a 'nothing' game. You just had to watch the players reactions both before and after the game to know that."
"we know we have to better and work a lot harder on some things" added Skitsko. "This team knows that . We are still the Rams. We are still a good team. It's up to us to get back to work and get better and improve our team so that we can give these guys a battle in the playoffs."

There were a lot of other happy smiling faces at the ring ceremony, the Rams 6th in 12 years and their fourth consecutive championship. The Rams compete in the always tough CDMFA and are seeking their unprecedented fifth consecutive title in 2007.
