RAMS RECEIVE CHAMPIONSHIP RINGS
The Sherwood Park Rams will be constantly reminded of their 1999 provincial championship. All they will have to do is bring their hand to their face and look at their championship rings which were presented to them Saturday at the Rams Field House.
Like the championship the team was able to capture last fall, the rings were some more hard work. The players on the team were responsible for raising half of the monies for the rings. Team fundraising would take care of the other half.
"They truly are a remarkable group of players," said Rams Head Coach Jim Skitsko. "They wanted the rings and put in the necessary effort to get them. The rings will be a permanent reminder that they were champions at least one time in their lives."
The ring itself is dominated by the design of a Ram jumping out of the letter "R". The words "Provincial Champions" encircle that item. The ring also includes the final score of the provincial championship game, the individual player's position, number, a green stone as well as a likeness of the championship trophy the team received.
Along the side of the ring is the Rams key slogan- RESPECT, ATTITUDE, MOTIVATION, SUCCESS. Over 100 people attended the function where the rings were passed out and the provincial banner was also displayed.
Rams players unanimously love their rings and believe it will be something that will remind them forever of their championship season."It represents the pride and joy of the championship season" said 13 year old Chris Neil, adding the team participated in three bottle drives to raise enough funds. "The parents and coaches helped out a lot. Without them this would have never happened."
Jeff Golinowski, 14 , said the championship game against Raymond last year was the best he has ever played in. "It was the best I have ever played in a football game," he said. "The rings show us that we were the best in Alberta. They really have sentimental value. It reminds us that our hard work paid off for us. We hustled five days a week to get those rings."
Fifteen year old Brendon Riopel was a veteran on the squad last season and hopes to play high school football next season. He said his ring will remind him of the years he played with the Rams. "It means a lot to me. It was my last year with the Rams and the last provincial championship of the millenium. It shows us that we really worked hard and all th players contributed together to get it."
The other players in the picture are Nathan Nichols, Blair Barzeele, Lance Beaudoin and Kevin Hammermeister.
